If the Spirit of God is living inside a person… can that person be in a legitimate battle with depression? Your thoughts…

yes, although the spirit of God is perfect, the place in which it dwells (inside you) is not. somone with the holy spirit can become depressed because of an outside source such as . however the holy spirit does allow you to overcome depression, just as God allows you to overcome sin. am i saying depression is a sin? no, i am saying simply that God loves to see you happy and becoming depressed does not make you happy. therefore, displeasing the lord.

Yes, I think so, and I’ve seen it happen before. I think that being depressed isn’t a sin, per say, but it can affect (or effect?) your life in a negitive way… like you become lazy or irritable and commit other sins as a result to it. But the Spirit is still living inside you as you struggle through this. I think it can possibly be a type of trial or something that God is allowing to happen to you, so you can hopefully, and ultimately grow closer to Him. But also, and I’m not completely sure yet about my view on this, different chemical imbalances can create the depression… not just the situations in your life “making” you depressed. Yes? Maybe. It’s a good question. According to Webster the word “depression” means: (1): a state of feeling sad : dejection (2): a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies c (1): a reduction in activity, amount, quality, or force (2): a lowering of vitality or functional activity. God calls us to be joyful in everything, but I believe that that doesn’t mean that we are always going to be what we know as happy all the time. Definitely not. So I guess I’ve strayed away from that the question was. So… my answer: yes. God never leaves us or forsakes us, even when we are not doing so well. Plus we still can commit sins while the Spirit is in us, so then therefore I’m sure other negative things could occur inside us as well…

i think that it is more than possible, it exist. and im glad you mentioned it because so many people dont want to get there feet wet. now to go off of what rainmemories said, i do believe that depression is a sin, based on the assumtion that if you are depressed, you are without joy in your life, the key word being joy, not happy. and joylessness is a sin. john piper talks about this in his book D cubed. it’s really “D cubed” i just dont want to spell it out. but i think piper presents a significant point, that when you allow or purposly pursue the act of not having joy, you are sinning, not because your sad or depressed, but because God calls us to be filled with joy by giving it to us in his right hand. if you dont accept it, yo are belittling God. and im pretty sure that’s a sin. but like any other, a sin is a sin. so depression isn’t some cardinal sin that your going to be paying off in purgitory for the rest of your life. it’s just a sin, and with God’s amaizing help, guidance, and power, you can over come, if you choose to.
