Topic: Worship / If I could sing just one song to God... what would it be?

Hmmmm… That’s a tough one. If I could sing just one song to God right now it would probably be “Heart of Worship”. I think that’s what it’s called.

What song best describes the heart of people of Collide right now? In other words, when we’re singing to God, which song best says what you want to say to God? (You can answer this question once a week, if you’d like.)

Thanks for the input, Brendan! :) Using that screen was just an idea I had, sort of last minute. I didn’t think through the fact that we’d be having a sunset at our backs.

But the act of worship is so much more than screens, lyrics, or me or you… come back to the heart for a moment… what really matters is where our hearts are in each and every moment. Sure singing along is nice, but if you know that you’re being distracted by something, especially if you know what it is, try to put it out of your mind. In this case, you could have closed your eyes and focused your attention on God. I think this can be a good challenge for all of us.

Here are some thoughts from Romans 12: Because god has given me a special gift, I have something to say to everyone among you. (v3a)

  1. Recognize the things that distract you from God.
  2. Remove them from your thoughts by giving them up to God. (So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. v1)
  3. Refocus on God, concentrating fully on Him and what He has done in your life, and the lives of others. (...be changed within by a new way of thinking… v2a)
  4. Respond to Him in spirit and in truth. (Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it… God brings the best out of you… v2b)

But don’t do this for me, or Jeff, or Stu, or anyone. Don’t do it for our sake. Do it for God only. (Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship. v1b)

Worship was great at SbtP this last Wednesday, but the idea of having the words sort of back fired. The screen was a little small, but I’m blind as a a bat so I just need to move up. But the way the backyard is positioned with the sun setting gives a fatty glare on the monitor screen. Maybe it would be better if you guys just went old school with a projector and pull down screen. Having the words to songs is great but I felt that with the size of the screen and the sun setting off a glare from the glass monitor that is was sort of distracting. I felt like I needed to use the words since they were there, but I couldn’t.

Just a thought…

It all sounds like a good conversation, but I soon realize your predicament. How do you take such a personal thing like worship and apply it to all without excluding everyone? I don’t have an answer but I will strive as you are to be real and true with God who deserves our praise, and maybe through that, worship, true worship will reveal it self.

It would appear that for this melody, you played your trumpet hard. and for that, I congratulate you Jefe, squire to the trumpets.

I think we’d all agree that worship is not about “us” – sure we all have our stylistic preferences and opinions about what it is, and what it should look like…and yet Jesus’ statement: “this people honors me with their lips but their heart is far from me” is a sobering reminder of what God is most concerned with – the heart -

dont miss my point in this discussion – as a committed christ follower…worshipping through music, in the context of a service with even ONE who is not – my focus…has got to be redirected from my preferences and ‘personal’ experience…to the very WILL and PURSUIT of the ONE who would leave the 99 for the 1 – the HEART of our God aches for those who are lost, and searching, and seeking something more – something truly deserving of their worship – something worthy of their lives – and so on a Sunday morning, with only 50-60% of our group engaged in Worship, regardless of what it looks like…why hasn’t our FOCUS moved from…”how does this cater to me?”...”didn’t they do that song LAST week?”... “why isn’t worship longer?”...to…”what can I do?” – “how much energy and passion and love can I unabashedly GIVE…in worshipping my God?” – “what kind of offering can I give?” – in order that…God may use MY WORSHIP to draw others to Himself – I want…I NEED, to be asking those kinds of questions – in order that my heart beats in one accord with the ONE who I’m ascribing worth and honor and praise to – worship is no longer about you and I…until WE, start asking “what it is” that God wants to do IN and THROUGH our worship…for His Glory – and until that happens…worship CANNOT be successful.

I must confess…I have NOT done well with this at all – my selfish tendencies often justify themselves through the guise of a verbally legitimized concern for God’s greater glory…or the overall health of a community of believers – truth be told…my self-effacing suggestions and concerns are a regular companion of my own selfish desire to size and shape worship so that it fits my personal grid of what really works…for ME anyway – we all do it…we just convince ourselves we don’t – but pride can’t survive at the foot of the cross – God won’t allow it – structure must always submit to spirit – so what does TRUE worship look like? – how do I find THAT? – How do I help others find it? – How do I let go of self…and all its trappings…and get back to the HEART of worship – LET THE MUSIC BEGIN

Jeff, u would make a great dictator… but in this case lets ask the alpha and omega what he would want… i think he’d rather be praised than appeal to people… remember “trust in Me and I will lead you if you trust in me”

Worship and facilitating a true worship experience is something we are always working to fine tune. As it pertains to our Sunday morning (Collide) service here are just a few things to consider:

This is our “crowd” level service. Wiile we love you guys and want to create an atmosphere that draws you closer to the very heart of God… you are not the “target” audience. Don’t take that personal Brendan : ) our target is the non-churched, non-christians that are coming in and out of our doors every week. How do we create a service that is non-threatening without compromising who we are? It’s a fine line believe me. We are doing our best to design a high-energy service that Christ followers feel totally comfortable bringing their friends to without watering down the truth of the Gospel. This means constantly tweaking. We do know this… a long, introspective, heavy worship set is not effective. However, your feedback is much appreciated. It tells josh and I that just as much as we love and need an opportunity to go deeper… spend longer in worship… so do you. I have a few suggestions… but this novel ends for now.

Worship needs to be at least 4 songs long if not 5… what happened to the worship experience that Assad would give not worrying about the end of the service, just singing to his God.

Maybe do worship at the end, message and game in the beginning?

well this opens up other doors to sin in general. lust? is it okay to ever lust after your spouse? is there a difference between the “dode” and lust that a married couple share? i think by my own reasoning on the lust issue its a lot clearer to discuss firmly, but the question still remains when is it okay to lie? and if i lie, god inspired or not, should i be expecting redemtion for this sin? Rahab did…

Well, I totally thought the same things when reading this passage again this year… I wrote it down in my journal because it confused me. I asked the same exact questions you had. I really have no idea why it was okay for her to lie and then even get rewarded for it and live when the walls of Jerico were going to fall… I always thought that honesty was the best policy and that we are supposed to be truthful people, no matter what. So… maybe not? Hm.
